As prolific music artists, Thievery Corporation has released eight studio albums since 1996, including a very recent release in February of The Temple of I & I. The album has been well received by critics and fans alike. With influences from Jamaica, the new release folds in more than a few hints of dub and reggae. Longtime Thievery fans appreciate the music’s return to the early days of sonic and atmospheric textures.
In addition to Denver, other stops on the Temple of I & I worldwide tour route include Paris, France; Basel, Switzerland; Berlin, Germany; Vienna, Austria; and Austin, Texas during the SXSW Festival in March.
Whether you want to get up close to the stage and dance or just hang back and take in the full sensory load of Thievery live in concert, the Fillmore Auditorium is a Denver experience in itself. It’s a landmark of the Capitol Hill neighborhood, complete with gritty Colfax Avenue pedestrian traffic and deep roots in the Denver music scene. The standing-room-only auditorium has opened its doors to music lovers since 1907. Its storied past includes three major renovations and its stage has hosted everything from worldwide chart-topping headliners to Denver’s own local music talent.
Is Thievery Corporation’s choice of Denver during the annual 420 festivities of World Cannabis Week a coincidence? We think not. Their cosmic live performances have always paired well with cannabis culture, and their recent fusion of more reggae and dub also lends itself nicely to combination with Denver’s elevated 420 atmosphere. The timing couldn’t be better. Come for the the 420 Rally at Civic Center Park on Thursday, April 20. Recommended: stay for an extra day to explore the city, sample goods purchased at the week’s events, and cap it off with Thievery Corporation at the Fillmore on Friday, April 21. Highly recommended: stay for the full weekend of World Cannabis for more events, a bazaar, and free shuttle service to all the festivities hot spots on April 22-23.
Maybe you’ve never heard of Thievery Corporation. Or maybe they’ve been part of the soundtrack to your chillout sessions and dance parties alike for the past 15 or 20 years. For any level of fandom, dancing to Thievery Corporation live in concert in Denver’s Fillmore Auditorium is a must. The fact that it coincides with Denver’s 420 celebrations is one of those fortuitous little bonuses that brings this fun night out to an even higher level.
